Football Predictions Monday
Nottingham Forest v Crystal Palace
Monday night football from the Premier League takes us to the City Ground, as Nottingham Forest welcome Crystal Palace.
Nottingham Forest have really impressed in the first few months of this campaign, especially away from home. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have beaten Southampton and Liverpool on the road before taking a point off both Brighton and Chelsea, the Tricky Trees have lost just once in the Premier League so far. However, it’s been a different story on home soil with Forest not able to pick up a win yet in front of their home faithful, their last home victory in a competitive fixture came back in April against Fulham, eight home games ago.
It’s been a really poor start for Crystal Palace, Oliver Glasner’s side just haven’t got going so far despite a lot of optimism amongst their fans before the campaign, with talks of a top eight finish from many. The Eagles remain just one of four sides yet to pick up a win so far, they also have the unwanted record of least number of goals scored out of the twenty teams.
Both of these sides have seen their games produce less than three goals more often than not in the Premier League this season, only three of Palace’s seven games have seen three or more goals whilst Nottingham Forest games have only seen over 2.5 goals once this season. Five of the last six competitive meetings between these two sides has ended in a stalemate, I wouldn’t be surprised to see another one here.
Football Predictions Tuesday
Aston Villa v Bologna
The UEFA Champions League returns to Villa Park on Tuesday night as Aston Villa take on Italian side Bologna.
Aston Villa have made the perfect start to their UEFA Champions League campaign, Unai Emery’s side avoided a tricky trip to Young Boys in their opener, beating the Swiss side 3-0 before producing another famous night at Villa Park with a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich three weeks ago. Since then, the Villans have drawn with Manchester United before beating Fulham 3-1 away from home in their game on Saturday, that result means Villa are now unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions, with victories in seven of them.
It was almost expected that Bologna would struggle once Thiago Motta had left along with the additional European football that they’ve got to play this season. I Rossoblu have won just one of their eight games in Serie A so far, they’ve become the draw specialists in the Italian top-flight after their six draws. Things haven’t been much better in the UEFA Champions League, they played out a goalless draw in their opener against Shakhtar Donetsk before falling to a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool, it’s a tough period for Vincenzo Italiano and it doesn’t get any easier with this trip to the West Midlands.
These two sides have never met before, I think we’ll see a home victory in this one but we could see Bolgona on the scoresheet, given Villa have conceded at least once in eight of their eleven games in all competitions this season.
Juventus v Stuttgart
The Allianz Stadium in Turin is the venue for this one as Juventus take on Stuttgart in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Juventus remain unbeaten under Thiago Motta this season, the Old Lady have played ten games across all competitions so far and are yet to face defeat. They’ve made the perfect start to their UEFA Champions League return, they beat Dutch side PSV 3-1 in their opening fixture before claiming an impressive 3-2 victory on the road against RB Leipzig, despite playing the last thirty minutes with 10 players. Juve also head in to this one off the back of a hard-earned three points against Lazio on Saturday night, a result which kept them inside the top three in Serie A.
After their brilliant success last season in the Bundesliga, Stuttgart are just showing signs of struggle in their opening few games of the season. Sebastian Hoeneb’s side are currently tenth in the Bundesliga after their first seven games, they’ve only picked up two wins so far and head into this fixture winless in their last three after their 4-0 thumping at Bayern Munich on Saturday. The Swabians have also struggled in this competition, beaten at Real Madrid in their opener before only managing a 1-1 draw against Sparta Prague last time out, despite being the heavy betting favourites.
It’s a first meeting for these two sides but we could be in for some goals, seven of Juventus’ last eight UEFA Champions League games have seen both teams score on the night.
Paris Saint-Germain v PSV Eindhoven
Paris Saint-Germain will welcome PSV to the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night in this UEFA Champions League clash.
PSG will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Arsenal in this competition three weeks ago, they’ve got a chance to put their UCL campaign back in the right direction on Tuesday night. Luis Enrique’s side struggled in their opener against Girona but did secure a win with a late own goal, the Parisians will be looking for a much more convincing win in this one and they’ve prepared well for it, beating Strasbourg 4-2 in Paris on Saturday.
PSV travel to Paris without a win in the Champions League so far, they fell to a 3-1 defeat in their opener away to Juventus before taking just a point on home soil to Sporting. However, Peter Bosz’ side will take confidence from their strong start to their Eredivisie campaign, the Lampen have won all of their first nine games so far and lead the title race by five points, if they can convert that winning form into the UCL, they could cause a few upsets throughout. If they are to defy the betting odds in this one, they’ll have to do it without their fans given the French authorities have put a ban on any away fans travelling to this one.
I’m expecting a home victory in this one, I think PSG will just have that extra bit of quality. PSV haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last ten UEFA Champions League “proper” away games, expect goals but PSG to take all three points.
Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund
The iconic Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is the venue for Tuesday nights fixture as Real Madrid take on Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, a repeat of last season’s UCL final.
Real Madrid are known for their unbelievable success in this competition, they remain the most successful club in the Champions League having won it fifteen times, so their defeat to Lille three weeks ago came as a big surprise to many. Carlo Ancelotti will want to put things right here, Los Blancos haven’t lost two UCL games in a row since 2020, they also haven’t lost on home soil in this competition for over two years. Real Madrid did bounce back from that defeat in France and have since won back-to-back league games, including their 2-1 victory in Vigo at the weekend.
Borussia Dortmund have suffered a couple of shock defeats in the Bundesliga this season under Nuri Sahin but his side currently sit top of the Champions League table after the first two games, their opening game victory away to Club Brugge was followed up with an unforgettable evening at the Signal Iduna Park at the start of the month, the Prussians beating Celtic 7-1 to secure their biggest ever UCL victory. The betting odds suggest this might be a step too far for Dortmund but they’ll be full of confidence as they look to extend their stay at the summit.
Real Madrid have a formidable home record and you’ve got to take that into serious consideration here, Los Blancos have won their last three meetings against the German side, whilst both teams have scored in four of their last five head-to-heads, I’m going for a comfortable home victory here.
Football Predictions Wednesday
Atalanta v Celtic
Celtic will make the trip to Bergamo on Wednesday to face Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League at the Gewiss Stadium.
Atalanta have started strongly in this Champions League campaign, La Dea added to their point from the goalless draw against Arsenal, with a 3-0 victory away to Shakhtar Donetsk in Germany. Since that victory, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have won back-to-back Serie A games, with their latest coming away to Venezia on Sunday afternoon. Gli Orobici will be hoping to continue their form in front of goal, they’ve scored ten goals in their last three games across all competitions.
Celtic will be fearing the worst ahead of this trip to Bergamo, the Bhoys travelled to Borussia Dortmund in their last UEFA Champions League fixture and left Germany feeling humiliated, a 7-1 defeat becomes one of their heaviest defeats in a European fixture. Brendan Rodgers side do tend to struggle on the road in Europe, they’ve lost their last six UCL away fixtures and have conceded over four goals on average, it’s a big worry for Celtic and they head into this one off the back of a 2-2 draw at home to Aberdeen, they’ll need to improve if they are to take anything away from Italy on Wednesday.
This is the first time Atalanta have faced a Scottish side in any competition, I think they’ll have a bit of joy in this one given Celtic’s recent record in Europe, home victory should be the outcome here.
FC Barcelona v FC Bayern Munich
Possibly the game of the week here, as FC Barcelona welcome FC Bayern Munich to the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in this mouth-watering UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday evening.
Former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick has started life well as the new Barcelona boss, his side remain top of La Liga following their 5-1 victory against Sevilla on Sunday night, with the big El Clasico to come at the weekend. Barca bounced back from that defeat to Monaco in their opening fixture with a 5-0 victory over Young Boys at the start of the month, they’ve won their last eight games on home soil, although their last defeat did come in the Champions League to PSG back in April.
Bayern Munich hit a tough patch just before the international break, their defeat to Aston Villa was sandwiched between back-to-back draws in the Bundesliga. However, the international break looked to have helped Vincent Kompany’s side, putting four past Stuttgart on Saturday without reply, the Bavarians will be happy to see Harry Kane picking up another hat-trick ahead of this big clash. Bayern should find themselves into the knockout stages given they’ve qualified out of every UCL group since 2008/2009 but a victory here would be a real confidence booster.
It’s fair to say Bayern Munich have dominated this fixture in recent years, they’ve won four of their last five meetings in the Champions League against Barca, it’s a tough game to call but I think we can expect goals in this one.
RB Leipzig v Liverpool
Liverpool will travel to Germany on Wednesday evening to face RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League at the Red Bull Arena.
It’s been a really good start from the Red Bulls in the Bundesliga, Marco Rose’s side remain just one of two sides that are yet to face defeat, with five wins and two draws from their first seven games, they sit joint first with Bayern Munich. However, RB Leipzig just haven’t been able to transfer that form over into the Champions League so far, they are one of the eight sides in this league phase that haven’t picked up a point yet following their defeats to Atletico Madrid and Juventus, a visit from high-flying Liverpool might not be what Rose’s side need right now.
When a long-serving manager leaves a club, it can take a while for players to react to what their new manager asks of them, that doesn’t seem to be the case for this Liverpool side under Arne Slot. The Dutchman has really hit the ground running in Merseyside and his side remain top of the Premier League after their 2-1 victory against Chelsea on Sunday. The Reds have played eleven games so far under Slot, they’ve won ten of those eleven and have lost just once, they’ll look to maintain that 100% record in the UCL with a win here.
Leipzig isn’t an easy place to go but Juventus were victorious here in the last game played at the Red Bull Arena, Liverpool should fancy their chances in this one, the Reds have won both their UCL games against the German side in 2021, they could make it three from three.
