On 1 September 2025, Commission President von der Leyen travelled to Romania as part of her mission to the EU’s frontline member states. She met with President Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

“Thank you for welcoming me to the military port and airbase of Constanța. Romania helps keep Europe safe in the airs and waters of the Black Sea. More than ever, your country is a key asset for Europe’s security. Our defence industry needs predictability and long-term contracts. That’s what SAFE is for. I’m confident that the first projects will be financed end of this year or beginning of the next.”
