A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia on Tuesday, triggering tsunami warnings for Alaska and Hawaii and advisories for parts of the U.S. West Coast.
The quake occurred roughly 85 miles off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The agency initially reported magnitudes of 8.0 and 8.7 before upgrading it to 8.8. Significant aftershocks, including magnitudes 6.3 and 6.9, were also recorded in the region.
Tsunami warnings are in effect for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands and the entire state of Hawaii. California, Oregon, and Washington remain under tsunami advisories while officials assess the threat. The first tsunami wave is expected to reach Hawaii shortly after 7:15 p.m. local time (1:15 a.m. ET), with destructive waves anticipated, according to Oahu Emergency Management.
Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency has activated its Emergency Operations Center, and state officials are coordinating with Governor Josh Green’s team through the Joint Information Center. As part of the statewide alert system, sirens are sounding across all Hawaiian islands every hour at 10 minutes past the hour for the next three hours.
Officials are urging residents to evacuate low-lying coastal areas immediately. In Honolulu, people are advised to leave the primary evacuation zone or seek shelter above the fourth floor of a building.
The National Weather Service warns that all coastlines in Hawaii are at risk due to the way tsunami waves can wrap around islands.

About this camera:
This is Hawaii’s first 4K 24/7 Livestream Webcam located at Maui Sands in Honokowai, Maui.
The 4K Live webcam feed from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary off the island of Maui. The Sanctuary, which spans all the way to the mysterious island of Molokai and Lanai in the distance, is the birthing and mating grounds of the North Pacific Humpback Whale population. They can be seen breaching, fin, and tail slapping in large numbers here from December to April. This live feed rotates from the north (tiny Mokuho’Oniki Island and Kahana, Maui), west (Island of Molokai) to the south (Island of Lanai).
This is the exact view that guests of Maui Sands Unit 4B experience right from the ground floor lanai. Unit 4B is a carbon-neutral, eco-friendly, and fully-equipped condo. Maui Sands is one of the original condo resorts in all of West Maui and it has retained a lot of the old Hawaii vintage feel of the ’60s before the hotel boom.
