Hokkaido is the second largest island in Japan and the largest and northernmost prefecture. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido and Honshu, and the two islands are connected by the Seikan Tunnel, an undersea railway.
The largest city in Hokkaido is Sapporo, the capital, and it is also an ordinance-designated city. Sakhalin is about 43 kilometers (26 miles) north of Hokkaido, with the Kuril Islands governed by Russia in the east and northeast, but Japan claims sovereignty over the four southernmost islands.
