Football Predictions Saturday
Southampton v Manchester United
Manchester United will make the 450-mile round trip to the south coast on Saturday afternoon as they take on Southampton at St Maryâs Stadium.
The international break came at the right time for Southampton, with the Saints failing to pick up any points from their first three league games back in the Premier League. Russell Martinâs side have only found the back of the net once so far, that came in their last outing away to Brentford, where they lost 3-1. Southampton received bad news during the international break, Leicester City wonât be receiving a points deduction and given the Foxes are likely to be fighting relegation with Southampton come May, itâs news that hasnât been welcomed on the south coast.
With all the change on and off the pitch at Old Trafford during the summer months, Manchester United got off to a perfect start with a 1-0 victory over Fulham which gave their faithful a bit of optimism for the new season. However, things havenât been great since and back-to-back defeats, including a 3-0 loss to their rivals Liverpool has already seen Erik ten Hag face more pressure. There performances seem to keep bringing up the same problems that United faced last season, their defence just like to switch off at vital times and they showed no real fight once they went behind against Liverpool in their last outing, things must change rapidly otherwise Ineos could already be looking to replace ten Hag.
This is such an important game for Manchester United given Southampton are a newly-promoted side. You have to go back to 2016 for the last time that the Saints beat United in any competition, a 1-0 victory over Louis van Gaalâs side at Old Trafford. Despite an unbeaten run in their last 15 meetings between the two sides, United have only won seven of those games, although theyâve won two of the last three at St Maryâs.
Brighton & Hove Albion v Ipswich Town
Brighton welcome Premier League new boys Ipswich Town to the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Itâs been a really promising start for Brighton under Fabian Hurzeler, heâs yet to taste defeat as the Seagulls manager in his eight games (including pre-season). The Albion have already taken maximum points off Manchester United and held Arsenal to a draw at the Emirates, this should be a slightly easier task although this is the Premier League and theyâll need to make sure they keep their focus if they are pick up where they left off.
Ipswich Town suffered back-to-back defeats in their first two games back in the Premier League followed by an early exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of League Two side AFC Wimbledon. However, their last outing was much better from Kieran McKennaâs side, they got up and running on with a point at home to Fulham and will now look for their first victory of the season, but itâs a tough ask on Saturday.
These two sides have never met in the English top flight, their last meeting came seven years ago in the Championship, with the two sides sharing the points. This is two different sides now though, I think weâll some more entertaining football from both sides in this one, I expect goals on the south coast but Brighton should have too much and claim all three points.
Crystal Palace v Leicester City
Leicester City will make the trip to South London on Saturday to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
It hasnât been the start that Oliver Glasner had hoped with this his first full season in charge of the Eagles, his side faced consecutive defeats in the Premier League before thumping Championship side Norwich 4-0 in the cup. Palace did manage to secure a point away at Chelsea in their last outing with Eberechi Eze picking up his first goal of this Premier League campaign, so there are still positives to take here despite still searching for their first league win but a visit of newly-promoted Leicester City could be just what the Eagles need.
Leicester City look to have avoided a points deduction with the news breaking during the international break. However, the Foxes still might find themselves battling another PSR charge if recent rumours are to be believed. On the pitch, Steve Cooperâs side started well with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham in their opener but since then, his side have lost back-to-back Premier League games and face a trip to Selhurst Park, where they havenât won in their last three attempts (Last win 2019).
Five of the last six meetings between the two sides have seen both teams find the back of the net, including the last three in South London, we could well see the same thing here but I think Palace will just nick it with a narrow win.
Fulham v West Ham United
West London meets East London on Saturday afternoon as Fulham take on West Ham United at Craven Cottage in the Premier League.
Fulham started their new Premier League campaign with a loss at Old Trafford on the opening night, although many thought Marco Silvaâs side could count themselves unlucky in terms of leaving Manchester without anything to show for their efforts. Since then, the Cottagers beat Leicester before picking up a point away to Ipswich. The concern for Marco Silva will be that his side havenât managed to keep a clean sheet yet despite playing two newly-promoted sides in their three games, they might struggle to keep on here as well.
West Ham bounced back from their defeat to Aston Villa in their opening game of the campaign with a victory over Crystal Palace and then a 1-0 win at home to Bournemouth in the EFL Cup. Just before the international break, the Hammers faced current champions Manchester City but couldnât keep Erling Haaland quiet, with the big man completing back-to-back hat-tricks in the Premier League. Julen Lopetegui wont worry too much about the Man City result, his side created a few chances in that game, these are the type of games heâll expect his side to win if they are to challenge for those European places come May.
Fulham won both of these meetings last season including a 5-0 hammering in this exact fixture, I think weâll see both sides on the scoresheet in this one, thereâs been just one draw in the last ten competitive meetings between these two at Craven Cottage.
Liverpool v Nottingham Forest
Liverpool will look to continue their fine form on Saturday as they take on Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
Life couldnât have started any better for Arne Slot as the Liverpool manager, it was always going to be a difficult job to take over Jurgen Klopp and itâs still early days, but with three victories from three games and without conceding a goal, the Reds have adapted well. Slotâs biggest test so far was his trip to Old Trafford but he hit the jackpot, a Luis Diaz first-half brace was added to by Mo Salah in the second half, a dominant victory over their rivals from across the M62.
Nottingham Forest remain unbeaten in their first three Premier League games, after picking up a draw in their first game against Bournemouth, the Tricky Trees then went to Southampton and came home with all three points. In their last outing, Nuno Espirito Santoâs side played out a 1-1 draw with Wolves before the international break, five points from their first three games is a really strong start for the Reds but theyâll have to defy the betting odds on Merseyside if they are to keep this unbeaten run going.
Since Nottingham Forestâs return to the English top-flight, these two sides have met four times in the PL, Liverpool have won three and Forest have won one. Iâve got to agree with the betting odds on this one, Liverpool should secure a comfortable win.
Manchester City v Brentford
Brentford will travel to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to face Manchester City in the Premier League.
Manchester Cityâs hearing regarding their 115 breaches of Premier League rules is set to start on Monday, thereâs going to be so much noise around the club but Pep Guardiola will make sure his side are fully focussed on their on-field performances, starting on Saturday. Man City remain just one of two teams (Liverpool) to hold a 100% record in this Premier League campaign after three games and a lot of that is down to Erling Haalandâs back-to-back hat-tricks, Iâm sure heâs eying up a hat-trick of hat-tricks.
Ivan Toney completed his move from Brentford to Al-Ahli during the international break but Thomas Frank had already started life without him, the Englishman didnât feature in the Beesâ first three games of the season and quite surprisingly, he hasnât really been missed. The side from West London have won two league games already, if they can keep these performances up, theyâll prove a lot of people wrong, including myself, who thought they would struggle this season. Thereâs a long way to go of course but itâs been a good start for the Bees.
Brentford actually have previous in East Manchester, the Bees defied the betting odds back in 2022 after claiming a 2-1 victory over Pep Guardiolaâs side, theyâll have to defy those odds again if you are to believe the betting market.
Marseille v Nice
The Stade Velodrome is the venue for this one as Marseille and Nice come head-to-head in Ligue 1 on Saturday afternoon.
Roberto De Zerbi has made a real impact since taking over Marseille, the Olympians sit second in Ligue 1 after their first three games, winning two and drawing one. The biggest change at this early stage, is the fact Marseille are scoring for fun, theyâve scored at least two goals in their last seven games (Including 4 pre-season games). However, weâve seen it before with De Zerbiâs sideâs at Sassuolo and Brighton mainly, his style of play can leave games wide open resulting in both teams finding the back of the net, thatâs occurred in all of Marseilleâs three league games so far, itâs entertaining for the neutral.
Nice started their Ligue 1 campaign with a shock defeat to newly-promoted side Auxerre, they were then held at home by Toulouse before finally picking up their first three points of the season away to Angers, despite playing the last twenty-five minutes with ten men, the Eaglets still managed to score two goals and topped off a brilliant performance with a 4-1 win. Franck Haiseâs side could also be another entertaining side this season, theyâve also seen both teams find the back of the net in their first three games in Ligue 1.
Marseille havenât beaten Nice in their last three meetings but this is a different side and I fancy them to continue their impressive start and take all three points here.
Empoli v Juventus
Juventus will make a trip to the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Saturday night to face Empoli in Serie A.
If you had looked at Empoliâs first three games in Serie A this season, youâd have thought that Roberto DâAversaâs side would find themselves towards the bottom at this early stage but the Azzurri Empolesi have started off brilliantly. A draw at home to Monza was then followed up with a fantastic 2-1 victory away to Roma before travelling to Bologna and taking a point off them, giving them five points from a possible nine, things donât get easier for Empoli as they welcome Juventus.
The Old Lady have been revitalised under Thiago Motta, Juventus beat Como and Verona 3-0 in their first two games but faced a trickier test in their last outing against AS Roma. The game in Turin was a bit of a damp-squib in all honesty, the game finished goalless but chances were also very limited with both sides produced an xG of around 0.50. Itâs just a little reminder for Juve that they still have work to do if they are to produce some sort of title challenge, Iâm sure that will come under Thiago Motta but right now, they must just keep winning games.
Juventus have won six of the last seven meetings between these two sides in Tuscany, I donât think this one will be a thriller but I can see Juventus picking up another three points on the road.
Aston Villa v Everton
Aston Villa and Everton will meet on Saturday evening at Villa Park for this intriguing Premier League clash.
Aston Villa have made a solid start to their Premier League campaign, theyâve beaten West Ham and Leicester but came up short against Arsenal, resulting in six points from a possible nine for Unai Emeryâs side. With their first Champions League fixture on the horizon, Villa will want to go into that game against Young Boys off the back of a victory here, they could be without Ollie Watkins for this one with the striker withdrawing from the current England camp with an injury.
I suppose time will tell whether the international break came at a good time for Everton, their last outing just summed everything up for the Toffees at this moment, with misery and a real feel of âdoom and gloomâ surrounding the club. The Blues found themselves 2-0 up against Bournemouth at Goodison Park with just 4 minutes plus stoppage time to play, they were in complete control until Antoine Semenyo pulled one back in the 87th minute before Sean Dycheâs side just completely collapsed and not only conceded an equaliser in the 92nd minute, they lost the game 3-2 in the 96th minute, much to the anger of their faithful. The Toffees remain winless in the league as the pressure ramps up on Dyche, with some fans already demanding change.
Everton somehow have to forget about that calamity in their last game but a trip to Villa Park is always a tricky place, Villa have won four of the last five head-to-head games in the league here. The Toffees did get a win here in their last visit but that was in the EFL Cup.
Holstein Kiel v Bayern Munich
Newly-promoted Holstein Kiel will welcome German giants Bayern Munich to the Holstein-Stadion for this Bundesliga clash on Saturday evening.
Holstein Kiel secured their place in the German top-flight for the first time in their history by finishing as runners-up in the 2.Bundesliga last season, Marcel Rappâs side are amongst the betting favourites for relegation this season but this is a journey that their fans just have to enjoy. Life hasnât started too well for the Storks this season, despite scoring twice away to Hoffenheim, they left with nothing to show for their efforts and then followed that up with another defeat, this time to Wolfsburg on home soil. Thereâs going to be more winnable games coming up for the Storks compared to this one but itâs still a game theyâll be hoping they can enjoy.
Bayern Munich with Vincent Kompany at the helm have started very well this season, they remain one of three teams to still have a 100% record (Heidenheim and RB Leipzig) after the first two games. The Bavarians have also been boosted with the fact their likely title contenders in Bayer Leverkusen have already dropped points this season. Bayern Munich are the heavy favourites in this one according to the betting market.
These two sides have only met once before and that came in the DFB Pokal, despite being the heavy favourites again in 2021, Bayern Munich were eliminated on penalties.
AC Milan v Venezia
Venezia will take on AC Milan at the iconic San Siro on Saturday night in this Serie A clash.
AC Milan have started the season poorly under new manager Paulo Fonseca, the Rossoneri are yet to get a victory from any of their first three games in Serie A so far. They kicked their campaign off with a 2-2 draw at home to Torino, a game where Fonsecaâs side found themselves trailing by two goals in the 88th minute. They followed that up with a defeat to Parma before being held to another 2-2 draw, this time against Lazio, itâs been a tough start but the Devil got a chance to get their season heading in the right direction with a victory on Saturday, with the pressure already on Paulo Fonseca.
Veneziaâs return to the Italian top-flight has also got off to a slow start, theyâve lost two of their three games but managed to pick up a point on the road against Fiorentina. Their last outing against Torino gave Joel Pohjanpalo his Serie A debut following his return from injury, the Finnish striker scored twenty-two goals in Serie B last season and might fancy his chances against this leaky Milan defence.
These two sides have only come head-to-head twice in the last twenty years, Milan won both meetings during the 2021/2022 Serie A campaign whilst keeping two clean sheets in the process.
Bournemouth v Chelsea
After consecutive games on the road, Bournemouth return to familiar surroundings on Saturday night as they host Chelsea in the Premier League at the Vitality Stadium.
Bournemouth picked up their first three points of the season before the international break and they did it in style. The Cherries were 2-0 down with just minutes to play away at Everton before goals from Antoine Semenyo (87th min), Lewis Cook (92nd min) and Luis Sinisterra (96th min) gave Andoni Iraolaâs side a memorable win. Bournemouth will now be hoping to continue this winning form although the Cherries havenât beaten Chelsea since 2019.
Chelsea have struggled a little since their emphatic 6-2 victory away to Wolves, a defeat in Geneva to Servette gave the Blues a slight worry in terms of progressing into the next stage of the Conference League, they did eventually go through on aggregate. That was then followed up with a disappointing stalemate with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge, despite producing seven shots on target, Enzo Marescaâs side only managed one goal.
Chelsea have won four of their seven trips to the Vitality stadium in competitive fixtures, I think weâll see an entertaining game here with plenty of goals, all three of Bournemouthâs league games so far have seen both teams on the scoresheet. I think Chelsea should have enough to see out a victory.
Paris Saint-Germain v Brest
Brest will travel to the Parc des Princes on Saturday evening to take on Paris Saint-Germain in this Ligue 1 fixture.
The football world wondered how PSG would cope without their main man Kylian Mbappe following his departure, Luis Enriqueâs side havenât slowed down at all having won all of their three league games this season. Not only have they got a 100% record in Ligue 1 so far, theyâve done it in style, scoring at least three goals in each game, including an impressive 3-1 victory away to Lille in their last outing. The Parisians wouldnât have welcomed the international break but given their recent form youâd expect PSG to keep up their winning streak on home soil, they lost just twice at home last season.
Brest will play their first ever Champions League fixture on Thursday against SK Sturm Graz, the Pirates will do exceptionally well if they are to put in a top four challenge along with the additional European football to deal with and Eric Royâs side have made a sluggish start this season. A 5-1 thumping against Marseille in their opener wasnât ideal, they followed that up with another defeat to Lens but did pick up their first three points of the season with a 4-0 victory against St Etienne, a victory that might have installed a bit of confidence within the camp.
We could see both teams on the scoresheet in this one, both sides have found the back of the net in each of their last four head-to-head games, Iâve got to agree with the betting market on this one and back PSG to get the win.
Real Sociedad v Real Madrid
San Sebastian awaits as Real Sociedad welcome Real Madrid to the Reale Arena on Saturday night for this La Liga clash.
Just one victory in their first four La Liga games so far for Real Sociedad is a bit concerning for Imanol Alguacil and co. La Real have lost both of their home games against sides that they should really be beating (Rayo Vallecano and Alaves). Txuri-Urdin have a long list of injuries which has recently been added to following Mikel Oyarzabalâs sprained ankle during the international break, heâs a major doubt for this clash on Saturday night which will be a big blow for Real Sociedad.
Real Madridâs title defence has started slowly, Los Blancos remain unbeaten but having dropped points in two of their four games (Mallorca and Las Palmas), they already trail their likely title challengers Barcelona by four points. Carlo Ancelotti wonât be worrying too much just yet, Jude Bellingham has returned to training this week giving a boost to Los Vikingos, Madrid face a tough challenge here but will be hoping they can find a way to secure their first away win of the season.
Real Madrid have won three of their last five visits to San Sebastian (W3, D1, L1), both teams have scored in just two of their last six meetings, I think weâll see Madrid claim all three points here but it wonât be easy.
Football Predictions Sunday
Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal
The Premier League returns after the international break with a mouth-watering fixture on Sunday afternoon with Tottenham and Arsenal set to battle it out in this North London derby.
Tottenham have started their Premier League with a mixture of results, having drawn their opener against Leicester, they thumped Everton 4-0 but then came back down to reality with a defeat away to Newcastle. However, Ange Postecoglou could have both Dominic Solanke and Micky van de Ven back for this one, a huge boost ahead of a massive fixture, a fixture that Spurs have struggled in of late with only one victory in their last seven competitive attempts.
It hasnât been a great couple of weeks for Arsenal, they went into the international break feeling aggrieved following their stalemate with Brighton. The Gunners felt that Declan Riceâs sending off was very soft and ultimately cost them picking up all three points, Rice isnât the only player to miss this fixture though, thereâs major doubt over Riccardo Calafiori and their captain Martin Odegaard, who both picked up injuries during international duty. All three players will be a huge miss for Mikel Arteta but he could give Raheem Sterling his first taste of a North London derby in this one.
As a neutral, I love this fixture and always look forward to it. Itâs a fixture that provides us with entertainment and goals more often than not, with eight of the last ten meetings producing at least three goals, I think we could be in for another cracker on Sunday afternoon.
Atalanta v Fiorentina
Fiorentina will make the trip north of Sunday afternoon as they take on Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.
Europa League winners last season, Atalanta havenât been able to pick up where they left off before the summer, La Dea have won just one of their first three Serie A games so far and went into the international break off the back of a 4-0 hammering away to Inter Milan. Gian Piero Gasperini has suggested the international break will be used to work out his setup in terms of his new recruits with the hope of getting the Orobics season back on track.
Fiorentina have the become the early draw specialists in Serie A, theyâve produced a stalemate in all of their league games so far and I Viola have also drawn their two Conference League fixtures, meaning they drawn their first five competitive games for the first time in their history. The worry for Raffaele Palladino must be the fact that theyâve already played two of the three newly-promoted sides and still havenât been able to pick up a victory and a trip to Bergamo is never easy.
I think we can expect goals on Sunday afternoon, seventeen of Atalantaâs last twenty league games have produced at least three goals. In addition, three of the last four meetings between these two have produced five goals, with Fiorentina winning two of these with a 3-2 scoreline.
Girona v FC Barcelona
Two Catalan sides come head-to-head on Sunday afternoon as Girona welcome Barcelona to the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi.
In a week where Girona will play their first ever Champions League fixture, thereâs a lot of excitement within the camp right now. After a sluggish start in the league, Blanquivermells have found their form from last season with consecutive victories over Osasuna and Sevilla before the international break. However, head coach Michel will be hoping the break doesnât disrupt their performances given this game is followed by a trip to take on PSG on Wednesday.
Itâs been a perfect start to the season for Barcelona and Hansi Flick, his side remain the only side in La Liga with a 100% record, their four victories have already seen Barca put four points between their likely title challengers Real Madrid. Flickâs side had edge three of their victories with narrow 2-1 wins but there were no doubts in their last outing as they destroyed Valladolid 7-0, if they are to make it five wins from five, theyâll have to do something theyâve not done in their last three meetings against Girona.
Girona are unbeaten in their last three games against their Catalan rivals, theyâve won their last two head-to-heads with the same scoreline of 4-2. I feel like we might see Barcelona continue their winning streak in this one, weâll likely see both teams on the scoresheet but Hansi Flickâs side should have enough to edge out another win.
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Newcastle United
The final game of this Premier League weekend will take place at Molineux Stadium as Wolverhampton Wanderers take on Newcastle United.
At the start of the season, I felt like Wolves might struggle this year. Of course, itâs still early days having played just three Premier League game but Gary OâNeilâs side are yet to pick up a victory, they did manage to bounce back from their 6-2 humiliation at the hands of Chelsea but a stalemate against Nottingham Forest has put Wolves into just six teams yet to pick up three points, not the start their faithful would have hoped for.
By contrast, things have started well for Eddie Howe and Newcastle, unbeaten so far this season with two wins from their three games, including their 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in their last game before the international break. The biggest boost so far for Howe and co is the return of Sandro Tonali following his ban for betting breaches, the Italian feels like a new signing for the Toon Army and maybe that little bit extra that Newcastle need to challenge for the top four again.
These two sides have both found the back of the net in ten of their last eleven meetings across all competitions at Molineux, six of which have ended in a 1-1 scoreline, I think we could see the same here on Sunday afternoon, another stalemate.
Lens v Lyon
The Stade Bollaert-Delelis is the venue for this one as Lens take on Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday evening.
Lens have made a fast start under Will Still, Les Sang et Or currently sit fourth in the French top-flight after winning two of their three games and playing out a 1-1 draw in their last outing away to Monaco. Will Stillâs side currently sit bottom of the Over/Under table in Ligue 1 having scored just four and conceded just one, resulting in a league low 1.7 goals per games, although not quite entertaining, itâs working for Lens as they look to finish in those European places again come May.
After a brilliant end to their season under Pierre Sage, Lyon havenât been able to maintain their form after the summer break. Les Gones fell to defeat in their first two opening games of the season without scoring, they did manage to pick up their first three points of the season just before the international break with a 4-3 victory over Strasbourg despite being 3-1 down after 60 minutes.
You have to go back to 2015 to see the last time that Lyon won in the northern city of Lens, five games ago. Lens are currently unbeaten in their last five competitive home games and they should find themselves on the scoresheet given theyâve score in fifteen of their last sixteen games on home soil.
Monza v Inter Milan
Scudetto holders Inter Milan make the short trip to Monza on Sunday evening in this clash at the Brianteo.
Alessandro Nesta will face his former rivals once again here as the former AC Milan defender looks to pick up his first three points of the season in charge of Monza. The Italian must have felt frustrated after his side took an early 2-0 lead away to Fiorentina before the international break, they went into that game as the underdogs according the betting market and they very nearly defied the betting odds until Robin Gosens equalised in the 96th minute, meaning Monza remain winless in their first three Serie A games.
Defending champions Inter struggled on matchday one with a 2-2 draw away to Genoa. However, Simone Inzaghiâs side made sure they wouldnât wait around to get things back on track putting together consecutive wins including the 4-0 thumping of Atalanta in their last game. Inter will be hoping to maintain their away record from last season, the Nerazzurri ended the season with the best record on the road having lost just once in their nineteen games.
Inter enjoyed real success on this ground last season, they smashed Monza 5-1 and will be hopeful of making it three wins on the bounce against Monza. It might not be as straight forward as their meeting back in January but I expect I Nerazzurri to win this one.
Atletico Madrid v Valencia
Struggling Valencia travel to the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday evening to face Atletico Madrid as the two sides bring this weekendâs La Liga action to a close.
Atletico Madrid were boosted just before the international break after Angel Correaâs 92nd minute winner just four minutes after coming off the bench away to Athletic Club. The victory puts Atleti level on points with Real Madrid and Villarreal after their first four games of the season. With RB Leipzig visiting in the Champions League on Thursday, Diego Simone will want his side to go into that game with lots of momentum, a win on home soil could well do that.
Ruben Baraja has been the head coach of Valencia for over a year now but now finds himself under some real pressure given the start Los Ches have had. His side sit bottom of La Liga after the first four games having lost three and drawing one. Not only has it been a tough start to the campaign, they are now winless in their last eleven league games, they havenât put together a winless run in twelve games since Gary Nevilleâs famous time in charge of the club.
Valencia could well claim this unwanted record of twelve league games without a win as Los Ches havenât beaten Atletico Madrid away from home in their last fifteen attempts, you have to go back to 2011 for a Valencia win here. Iâm expecting a home win here.
